QoL (AYA) Cluster: A Horizon Europe Collaboration to
Improve AYA Cancer Survivorship

PredictAYA is part of the Quality of Life (Adolescents and Young Adults) Cluster – QoL (AYA) Cluster -, which is a collaboration of Horizon Europe projects that work to improve the quality of life of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) living with and beyond cancer.

The cluster brings together complementary research and innovation initiatives that address the long-term consequences of cancer and its treatment. Although survival rates for young people with cancer are improving, many experience significant late effects that impact their physical health, mental well-being, education, employment, and social participation.

The QoL (AYA) Cluster contributes to a more coordinated European response to these challenges by advancing evidence-based survivorship care, digital health solutions, predictive approaches, and harmonised care pathways.

In line with the goals of the EU Mission on Cancer and Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, the cluster promotes the development of patient-centred, equitable, and sustainable models for long-term cancer care throughout Europe.

Projects in the QoL (AYA) Cluster

The cluster includes the following Horizon Europe projects:

eQuoL

e-QuoL aims at providing children, adolescents and young adults who have survived cancer with e-health tools designed specifically for and with them to help them manage their health.

LATE-AYA

LATE-AYA seeks to understand and address late effects of treatment of AYA cancer survivors with AI-based digital phenotyping and a non-invasive holistic approach.

MAYA

MAYA aims to empower AYA cancer survivors to manage their cardiovascular health through digital tools that address cardiotoxic-related late effects of cancer treatment.

PanCare4AYA

PanCare4AYA’s overall aim is to improve the health and quality of life of survivors of AYA cancer by developing and testing a screening programme for early detection and treatment of late effects.

PredictAYA

PredictAYA focuses on understanding the long-term effects of cancer treatments in AYA cancer survivors, and on identifying ways to prevent them.

TRANSCEND-XR

TRANSCEND-XR co-creates and implements an innovative extended reality (XR) intervention, aiming to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors and set new standards for digital health in cancer survivorship.

Why this collaboration matters

By working together, the QoL (AYA) Cluster aims to enhance knowledge exchange, align communication efforts, and maximise the impact of Horizon Europe investment in cancer survivorship.

Through joint dissemination activities, including shared materials and coordinated outreach, the cluster raises awareness of the challenges faced by AYA survivors and encourages engagement with patients, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and research stakeholders across Europe.

Other Related Initiatives

PredictAYA also builds on and collaborates with other EU-funded initiatives in the field of AYA oncology. Examples include:

STRONG-AYA

STRONG-AYA is a novel, interdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder European network to improve healthcare services, research and outcomes for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer, defined as individuals aged 15-39 years at cancer diagnosis. The project is setting up a value-based healthcare research ecosystem to develop data-driven, interactive policy and visualization tools that bring, in co-creation with all stakeholders including patients, novel insights into AYA healthcare. STRONG-AYA is coordinated by the Netherlands Cancer Institute.

JANE is an EU Joint Action aiming at shaping seven new Networks of Expertise (NoEs) on cancer in the following domains: personalized primary prevention, survivorship, palliative care, omic technologies, hi-tech medical resources, one or more complex & poor-prognosis cancer(s), adolescents and young adults with cancer. JANE is coordinated by the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori di Milano, involving 121 partners from 30 countries all over Europe.

EU-CAYAS-NET built a European Network of Youth Cancer Survivors and created a knowledge centre and interactive platform for social networking that empowers cancer survivors to advocate for their rights and needs. The project finished in June 2025 and focussed on three main themes: Quality of Life, Adolescent and Young Adult care, Equality Diversity and Inclusion.

Building on the previous EU-CAYAS-NET and OACCUs projects, the European Youth Cancer Network (YARN) – is an ambitious, bold and promising EU-funded initiative bringing together young people with cancer experience, healthcare professionals, psychosocial care specialists, policy-makers, researchers, and patient organisations. Spanning 25 EU Member States and 3 eligible neighbouring countries, and delivered by 19 Beneficiaries, 1 Affiliated Entity, and 39 Associated Partners, YARN is the largest multi-stakeholder, lived experience driven effort of its kind in Europe to improve quality of life for children, adolescents, and young adults affected by cancer.

The MELODIC project aims to promote the mental health and well-being of young adults with cancer and their loved ones. This will be done by developing a more systematic assessment of symptoms and needs, and by early identification and response to mental health and psychosocial support needs during the first year after cancer diagnosis. The project will provide information on the mental health support needs of young adults with cancer (18-35 years) and their loved ones, and on the experiences of health professionals in supporting young adults with cancer.

The European Network for Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer (ENTYAC) is an informal network made up of engaged professionals who work across all areas of Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer related care in national and international AYA focused organisations.
