On 11 – 12 June 2026, the PredictAYA consortium gathered in Milan, Italy, for the project’s General Assembly, hosted by Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori. Project partners came together to reflect on the achievements of the first year and plan the next phase of activities.
Over the two days, partners reviewed progress across all project activities. A major focus of the meeting was the development of the PredictAYA retrospective and prospective studies, including approaches to the collection, sharing and use of data from adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors across Europe. In dedicated working groups, partners discussed methodological considerations related to data analyses, the use of existing data sources in different European countries, and challenges related to the use of real-world data to support research on long-term outcomes and late effects among AYA cancer survivors.
Ethical considerations and patient engagement in PredictAYA were also central themes throughout the meeting. Partners exchanged perspectives on patient consent procedures, involvement of the PredictAYA Patient and Relatives Advisory Board (PRAB), data governance, and responsible data use in multinational research. The external Ethics Review Board provided valuable feedback and recommendations on these points to help guide the implementation of the project.
The second day of the meeting featured dedicated working groups on the clinical studies and presentations of preliminary research results. Partners shared ongoing work related to cancer incidence and survival among AYAs in Europe using cancer registry data from the NORDCAN and EUROCARE initiatives. Preliminary findings from a review of existing evidence on the prediction of late effects in AYA cancer survivors highlight existing research gaps, which PredictAYA can help to address.
The LATE-AYA project, one of PredictAYA’s synergy projects within the EU Cancer Mission Quality of Life (AYA) Cluster, was holding a parallel meeting in Milan, which was a great opportunity to connect in person.
Thank you to our partner Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori for hosting the meeting, and to all project partners for their contributions throughout the first year of the project!
